Husøy, a small fishing village in Senja, offers a unique mix of vibrant culture and untouched nature. Surrounded by fjords and dramatic peaks, it’s a haven for adventurers, photographers, and those seeking tranquility.
Known for its rich fishing heritage, Husøy provides a glimpse into Arctic life, with experiences ranging from guided tours of the local fishery to fishing expeditions with seasoned skippers.
Husøy is a small island in Øyfjorden on Senja, Norway’s second-largest island (1,589 km²). The island has a rich history closely tied to the sea and fisheries.
In 1932, Br. Karlsen established its fish processing plant on Husøy, which at the time only received whitefish. Back then, hardly anyone lived permanently on the island. Today, Br. Karlsen buys and processes both salmon and whitefish, and remains a central part of the local community.

From the late 1940s, people began moving to Husøy from the more exposed settlements further out in the fjord. The first came from Trælvik, and the larger migration started in 1952–1953 from Toften, Øyfjordvær, and Breivika. Husøy was chosen as a new home because the island has a safe harbor, making it easier and safer to fish off the coast of Senja.
Today, Husøy has just over 300 inhabitants from about 20 different nations. Fishing, harvesting, and work in the salmon and whitefish processing plants are the most important occupations, but the island also offers jobs in the school, kindergarten, shop, administration – and now, through the new Storm Hotel Husøy.
Storm Hotel is a natural addition to a vibrant community that combines local history, tradition, and modern hospitality. Here, we want to give our guests an experience close to the nature, history, and people that make Husøy unique.
