Perched at the edge of the ocean on Husøy in Senja, Storm Hotel Senja is more than just a place to sleep. It is an experience of being immersed in nature’s raw drama. Here, architecture is designed to enhance the meeting between people, landscape, and weather.
Behind the hotel is Topic Arkitekter, led by architect and managing director Constantin Boincean. From the very first sketch, the goal was clear: the architecture should not compete with nature, but frame it.
Husøy is a truly unique place. The island is surrounded by dramatic mountains, open sea, and rapidly changing weather. Due to the risk of landslides on the mainland, all construction in the area has historically taken place here. The result is a landscape with minimal human intervention, where nature embraces you from every direction.
This feeling was something the architects wanted to bring into the building itself. Storm Hotel Senja is therefore designed to keep you constantly connected to your surroundings. Whether you are sitting in the restaurant or waking up in a hotel room, the view is never far away.
One of the main sources of inspiration for the hotel’s architectural expression is the traditional fish racks used for drying fish in Senja. These simple wooden structures with uneven frames have been translated into modern architecture with clear geometric forms.
This gives the hotel its distinctive character. From the inside, the spaces feel open and structured, guiding the eye through the building and outward toward the sky, mountains, and sea. The architecture creates a safe and comfortable setting from which to experience the northern lights, powerful storms, and ever-changing light.
At first glance, Storm Hotel Senja almost resembles an ordinary house on Husøy. The hotel is deliberately adapted to local building traditions in order to blend naturally into its surroundings.
As you move down into the restaurant, a space opens up that few expect. Here you encounter large glass surfaces, raw materials, and a view that stretches straight out toward the open sea. The transition from the modest exterior to the dramatic interior experience is intentional—and precisely what makes a visit so memorable.
Many people travel to Senja to experience the forces of nature up close. Storm Hotel Senja is built exactly for this purpose. Here, you can sit indoors with great food and drinks while waves crash against the shore and the wind sweeps across the island just outside the windows.
The hotel functions as a tool for experiencing nature. You are protected, yet never disconnected. The architecture allows you to experience the weather, light, and atmosphere without sacrificing comfort.

In the construction of Storm Hotel Senja, local resources have been used wherever possible. Materials, craftsmen, and expertise are largely sourced from the surrounding area. The hotel is primarily built in wood, with concrete used where the building meets the mountain and terrain.
Sustainability is about more than material choices. An important aspect of the hotel is its contribution to the island’s economic sustainability. By creating a new industry alongside fishing, Storm Hotel Senja provides a foundation for continued development and year-round activity on Husøy.
For those seeking something extra special, the suites at Storm Hotel Senja offer a truly unique experience. The rooms are tall and elongated, almost tunnel-like, designed to draw your gaze directly toward the landscape outside.
Large window surfaces create the sensation of floating above the sea. When you step back from the window, the ground seems to disappear beneath you, and you suddenly find yourself immersed in nature. Many describe the experience as being on board a cruise ship—only far more intimate and close to nature.
The choice of materials, details, and finishes is consistently of high quality. You wake up to the sea, mountains, and weather right outside your bed—whether the day brings sunshine, storms, or northern lights.
Storm Hotel Senja serves as a natural gathering place on the island—a place to eat, relax, and share experiences before heading back out into nature. The hotel is not meant to be a destination in itself, but part of a greater whole.
For guests seeking unique hotel experiences, spectacular architecture, and close proximity to nature, Storm Hotel Senja is a place that leaves a lasting impression.
Constantin Boincean is the managing director and architect at Topic Arkitekter, an Oslo-based architecture firm with projects across Norway. The firm has been involved throughout the entire process, from zoning and concept development to detailed design of Storm Hotel Senja.
The result is a building where the original ideas have been preserved all the way from the first sketch to the finished hotel.
